Polio vaccines: Is global eradication within reach?

The goal is zero
Only one human disease, smallpox, has been successfully eradicated from the planet. In 1988, the world set its sights on the next target, poliomyelitis. Since then, the number of cases has been reduced from an estimated 350,000 cases in 125 endemic countries to only 37 reported cases in 3 countries in 2016 [1]. Of the three types of poliovirus, type 2 wild poliovirus was certified eradicated in 2015 [2] and type 3 has not been detected since November 2012 in Nigeria, and may have been eradicated.  Only type 1 remains in circulation in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
