Preventing the spread of infectious diseases: antivirulents versus antibiotics


Antimicrobial resistance poses one of the most severe global challenges to public health. Increased resistance of pathogens to antibiotics coupled with the paucity of development of new antibiotics threatens to propel us back into the preantibiotic era when infectious diseases were the most frequent cause of death. A recent report predicted that if no action was taken to alleviate this problem, 10 million people would die of infectious diseases in the year 2050, which is more than heart disease or cancer [1].
