Currently influenza is best known as a seasonal viral infection; this poses a health threat to high-risk populations, causing approximately 3–5 million cases and 250,000–500,000 deaths each year. However, history has seen outbreaks of pandemic influenza with devastating impacts, producing figures that dwarf those seen in recent years, most notably ‘Spanish flu’.
