Discovery of key molecules responsible for immune evasion by Plasmodium falciparum

A research group at Osaka University (Osaka, Japan) has demonstrated for the first time the mechanisms behind why acquired immunity to malaria is inefficient.

The study, published in Nature, demonstrated that Plasmodium falciparum increases the expression of specific proteins on infected erythrocytes that target immune inhibitory receptors.
