Is sleeping sickness a circadian disorder?

Researchers from the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (Lisbon, Portugal) have demonstrated that sleeping sickness is not only a disease of sleep, but causes an acceleration of the host’s circadian rhythms that affects a range of functions.

The article, published recently in Nature Communications, builds on previous research from this group, which demonstrated that sleeping sickness parasites possess biological clocks. In this study, the researchers investigated which clock genes are affected by Trypanosoma brucei, hoping that this information might prove useful in the development of new therapeutics.
