A peek behind the paper – Lucy Somerville on the impact of influenza virus infection in pregnancy

Take a look behind the scenes of a recent Future Microbiology review, entitled: “The impact of influenza virus infection in pregnancy”, as we ask author Lucy Somerville (Wollongong Hospital, Australia) about this year’s flu season and new developments in treating flu.

What inspired you to write this review?

Influenza virus infection remains an incredibly important and potentially preventable infectious disease that affects millions worldwide each year. The 2009 pandemic re-emphasized the particular importance of this infection in pregnant women, with increased hospitalization rates, mortality and adverse fetal outcomes. I felt it was timely to review the literature, see what developments have emerged in the field following the most recent pandemic and hopefully promote some awareness about its impact in this vulnerable population.
