Study estimates the neurological risks of Zika virus infection amongst unborn children

In February 2016 the WHO declared a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ in reaction to the drastic increase in the cases of Zika infections. In March 2016, Inserm (Paris, France) set out a study to investigate the link between the virus and neurological risks in an epidemic situation.

Inserm took charge of the sponsorship and scientific follow-up of a cohort of several thousand pregnant women, all of whom were exposed to Zika and lived in the French territories of the Americas. The cohort was funded by the French Ministry of Health and Solidarity (Exceptional Support of Research and Innovation) and included in the European ZIKAlliance program.
