The WHO has announced that on May 16 the National IHR Focal Point of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reported a laboratory-confirmed case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
The case, a 78-year-old male, presented to a hospital in Abu Dhabi on May 13 with a cough, fever and shortness of breath that began on May 3. He was confirmed to have MERS when a lower respiratory/nasopharyngeal sample tested positive by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The patient is currently in a stable condition in hospital.
