Gonorrhoea and syphilis rise by a fifth in England

England has seen a rise in cases of syphilis by 20% and gonorrhoea by 22%, when compared with 2016 data, according to a new Health Protection Report from Public Health England (PHE).

The report, which was published on 5 June 2018, looks at data on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and screening for chlamydia in England for the whole of the previous year.  Although the number of new STIs diagnosed in 2017 remained relatively stable, only a 0.3% increase compared with 2016, there were significant increases in specific infections.
