Expansion of the virus world in the era of metagenomics – an interview with Eugene Koonin

Metagenomics has been considered one of the most remarkable events in microbial ecology in recent years. The concept is to apply a wide variety of genomic techniques and bioinformatics tools in order to access the genetic content of entire communities of organisms directly from environmental samples.

In line with our focus this month on emerging technologies, we spoke to Eugene Koonin, Senior Investigator at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI; MD, USA) about metagenomics and how it can be used to understand more about the global virome.
