The US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has carried out surveillance of Escherichia coli in streams surrounding Athens (GA, USA), indicating the possibility of antibiotic resistance activity in urban waters.
The effort is part of an ongoing project to ensure the quality of waterways in the area, with this particular study hoping to better understand levels of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in the environment and whether this acts as a reservoir.
