The majority of residents in a rural village of Vietnam harbor multi-drug resistant, colistin-resistant E. coli, according to research presented at ASM Microbe (7–11 June, Atlanta, GA, USA).
Colistin-resistant bacteria are currently reported to be increasing globally due to misuse of this antibiotic in livestock. In addition, the discovery of mobile antibiotic resistance genes, such as mcr-1, indicates the further spread of resistance to colistin.
