ASM Microbe: Multi-use of kitchen towels and non-vegetarian diets encourage growth of food poisoning pathogens

A University of Mauritius (Mauritius) study has demonstrated that factors such as family size, family diet and usage affect the growth of pathogens, which could cause food poisoning, on kitchen towels.

In the study, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), ASM Microbe, 7–11 June (Atlanta, GA, USA), 100 kitchen towels were collected after 1 month of use and the bacteria cultured, identified using standard tests and the bacterial load determined. Of the 49% that tested positive for bacterial growth, 36.7% grew coliforms, 36.7% Enterococcus spp and 14.3% S. aureus.
