Following a five decade-long battle against malaria in Paraguay, the independent Malaria Elimination Certification Panel has recommended that the WHO (Geneva, Switzerland) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, certify the country malaria-free.
“It gives me great pleasure today to certify that Paraguay is officially free of malaria. Success stories like Paraguay’s show what is possible. If malaria can be eliminated in one country, it can be eliminated in all countries,” Ghebreyesus responded, following the announcement of Paraguay’s certification as malaria-free at the Second Annual Global Forum of Malaria-Eliminating Countries (11–13 June, San José, Costa Rica).
