Resistance ‘tipping point’ affected by antibiotic concentration and nutrient availability

Antibiotic treatment should be halted as soon as possible, according to new evidence from the University of Exeter (UK) suggesting that antibiotic concentration can push populations beyond tipping points, creating irreversible shifts in community composition towards drug-resistance.

Recent controversy has questioned whether patients should complete the course of antibiotics; however, little research has been conducted into how the length of antibiotic course impacts the development of resistance.
