Foodborne diseases are one of the leading causes of preventable illness and mortality globally and also cause a significant socio-economic burden in many countries. In addition to this, many of these diseases primarily affect children under five.
Accurate information on the burden of these diseases has been hard to come by, with the WHO estimates launched in December 2015 representing the one of the only comprehensive assessments of this under-estimated problem. In this infographic we give an overview of this data, including estimations of cases and mortality rates for the most common foodborne infections.
