Ian Roberts is the Professor of Microbiology within the Faculty of Life Sciences, at the University of Manchester, UK. Currently he is also the Associate Dean for Research in the faculty.
Following his PhD (1984) in the Department of Genetics at the University of Birmingham under the supervision of Dr Derrick Smith on Bacillus subtilis spore germination, he did postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr Graham Boulnois on capsule expression in pathogenic Escherichia coli at the University of Leicester.
In 1993 he became a Fellow of the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine and in 1995 moved to the Chair of Microbiology at the University of Manchester. Ian’s research is focussed on expression of capsular polysaccharide in UPEC, the metabolism of L. monocytogenes inside cells and the role of the gut microbiota during chronic parasite infections.
