Visceral leishmaniasis reported to be on the rise in Brazil

Despite control efforts, the incidence of visceral leishmaniasis has risen between 1990 and 2016, according to research analyzing the burden of leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Globally, the WHO estimates there are approximately 400,000 new cases of visceral leishmaniasis and 1 million new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis each year, leading to significant morbidity. Leishmaniasis is endemic in a number of countries and, in the Americas, 96% of cases occur in Brazil.
