HIV/AIDS cases in China surge by 14%

Chinese state media has reported a 14% increase in the number of individuals living with HIV and AIDS year-on-year, citing official presentations at the 5th National Conference on HIV/AIDS (27–29 September, Kunming, China).

Over 820, 000 individuals are estimated to be affected by HIV/AIDS in China as of June 2018, according to officials, with approximately 40,000 new cases in the second quarter of 2018 alone. This is a marked increase from the 720, 000 infected individuals that were reported as of June 2017.

However, it was also reported that most of these infections were sexually transmitted (93.1%), a marked change as historically many cases in China were a result of infected blood transfusions.

Officials at the conference stated that China has established an initial network for HIV/AIDS prevention and testing.
