IDWeek: Opioid-using youth could miss out on hepatitis C screening and treatment

Teens and young adults who have injected drugs are at risk of contracting hepatitis C but often miss out on testing and therefore treatment, according to a study being presented at IDWeek (3–7 October, CA, USA).

This study is the first to look at opioid use and hepatitis C testing in at-risk youth, assessing over 250, 000 young individuals. Lead author of the study, Rachel L. Epstein, from Boston Medical Center (MA, USA) commented: “We’re missing an opportunity to identify and treat young people who are at risk for this deadly infection.”
