Ebola nucleocapsid modeled to near-atomic resolution

For the first time, researchers from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; Onna, Japan) have imaged the structure of a central component of the Ebola virus at a near-atomic resolution.

The study, published recently in Nature, focused on the nucleocapsid, which encloses the virus’ genetic material. The team isolated nucleoprotein–RNA complexes, which make up the core of nucleocapsids, to a high degree of purity and analyzed these using a cryo-electron microscope (cryo-EM).
