Could malaria be detected by sniffer dogs?

Dogs may be able to detect malaria-infected people by scent, according to research presented at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Annual Meeting (October 28 – November 1, LA, USA).

With global progress in malaria stalling, identifying individuals carrying the parasite but who may be asymptomatic is critical in early treatment and for preventing the spread of disease. This research, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (WA, USA), assessed whether medical detection dogs could identify malaria-infected individuals via scent.
