Gastroenteritis in children unscathed by treatment with probiotics

Researchers from the University of Calgary (Canada), and Washington University School of Medicine (WA, USA) have led clinical trials in Canada and the US demonstrating that the treatment of child gastroenteritis with probiotics is ineffective; both studies are published in New England Journal of Medicine.

The Canadian study, led by Stephen Freedman (University of Calgary), involved six sites with nearly 900 child patients beginning in 2013. The concurrent US study, of which Freedman was co-principal investigator, involved 10 sites with 971 child patients treated between July 2014 and June 2017 and was led by David Schnadower (Washington University).
