The ongoing spread of Ebola continues as the numbers of those infected rises to 426, in the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Second only to the largest outbreak ever recorded, in West Africa (2014), which claimed over 11,000 lives.
Control of the outbreak has been challenging as efforts from emergency response teams, such as the International Rescue Committee, are hindered by continuing dangerous conflict between more than 50 armed groups in North Kivu. Failure to contain the spread and to contact those infected has amounted to a 57% mortality rate and reports of cases across 14 health zones.
