Researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine (TX, USA) have discovered Candida albicans can cross the blood–brain barrier, triggering an immune response that results in the formation of granuloma-type structures and memory impairments.
These findings in mice lead to questions about whether this fungus could cause a brain infection and if so, what the consequences of this might be.
