Epstein-Barr virus and schizophrenia linked by abnormal immune response

Individuals with schizophrenia also have higher level of antibodies against the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), according to new research from John Hopkins Medicine and Sheppard Pratt Health System (both MD, USA).

The team proposed that these heightened immune responses could either be a result of schizophrenia altering the immune system of these patients and making them more susceptible to EBV, or EBV infection and the subsequent response could increase the risk of schizophrenia.
