A large-scale trial of the world’s first malaria vaccine to provide partial protection is due to commence in Malawi, Kenya and Ghana. With progress stalling in malaria, and cases on the rise a vaccine could be key to fighting this disease.
The RTS,S vaccine was demonstrated to protect 40% of 5–17 month old infants in smaller trials, including a Phase III study completed in 2014. Following this, the EMA issued a positive opinion on the vaccine in 2015, stating that the benefits outweigh the risks, with the WHO endorsing the vaccine in January 2016.
