As a continuous and ever-growing threat to global public health, food safety and economic burden, it is critical to understand how antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their genes are transmitted from both meat and plant-foods to humans, in order to effectively combat antibiotic-resistant infections. However, research has notoriously been lacking on the role of plant sources.
Presented at ASM Microbe (20—24 June 2019, San Francisco, CA, USA), researchers have shown that plant-foods, not just meats, can contribute to the transmission of antibiotic resistance to the gut microbiome and spread of antibiotic–resistant bacteria.
