ASM Microbe: Skin microbiome may be altered by ocean swimming, potentially leading to infection

The skin is the human body’s first line of defense, both physically and immunologically, against microorganisms. Previous research has demonstrated that recreational water activities have been linked to microbial infections, with skin infections being the most frequently reported.

In recent research, which has been presented at ASM Microbe (20–24 June 2019, San Francisco, CA, USA), scientists have indicated that swimming in the ocean may alter the composition of the skin microbiome and can lead to increased vulnerability of infection.
