Bacteria can lose cell walls in order to resist antibiotics


Researchers from Newcastle University (UK) have confirmed a bacterial mechanism to ‘tolerate’ antibiotics by hiding their cell wall, known as ‘L-form switching’.

By studying the urinary samples of 30 elderly patients with recurrent urinary tract infections and using state-of-the-art techniques, the study, published today in Nature Communications, has provided important insights into the development of antibiotic resistance.
