Infectious Diseases Hub’s monthly focuses have given us the opportunity to delve deeper into a wide range of topics, from fungal diseases to influenza, giving a broader view of key research areas witihin these, and you can browse some of our focuses thus far below.


Influenza is best known as a seasonal viral infection, posing a threat to high-risk populations and causing approximately 250,000 – 500,000 deaths every year. However, the threat of a pandemic is always looming. In this focus we look at interspecies transmission in addition to different strategies for improving the current vaccine.

Zoonotic diseases are currently responsible for a significant morbidity and mortality burden across the globe, for example, helminthic infections, rabies and avian influenza. However, this is not the only concern, questions are often raised around which virus might jump the species barrier next and in this focus we take on this question and looking at the PREDICT project and some emerging diseases.

Fungal Diseases

Fungal diseases are often overlooked, and August saw the CDC’s first #ThinkFungus campaign. In light of this, we took a look at a variety of fungal infections and their burden, including Candida auris, a potentially multidrug-resistant pathogen and an emerging threat.

Mosquito-borne diseases

Mosquito-borne diseases are a significant burden across the globe causing millions of deaths every year. With growing concerns that global warming and increased travel could result in this burden expanding further we delved into some of the diseases transmitted by these insects.

Neglected tropical diseases

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect more than a billion individuals across the globe, with the poorest in society suffering disproportionately. In this focus we take an overview of the WHO’s Roadmap to tackle these diseases in an exclusive infographic and look closer at a few NTDs in a range of opinion pieces.

Viral hepatitis is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and in May we looked closer at this disease in line with Hepatitis Awareness Month, carrying out two exclusive interviews at ECCMID, in addition to an infographic summarising the differences between the five viral hepatitis types.
